Dear Friends,

kathy grayson

Ms. Kathy Grayson

It is with both a happy and a heavy heart that I announce the retirement of our beloved director of development, Ms. Kathy Grayson, effective mid-November of this year, 2021.

Kathy has served the Diocese of Maryland faithfully for many years. I first met her early in my ministry as bishop, when in November 2008 she co-chaired a committee that brought Archbishop Desmond Tutu to our diocese to highlight our ministry of racial reconciliation.

After serving as a volunteer in several capacities to support diocesan ministries, Kathy joined our staff as major gifts officer, then for the last five years as director of development. She has been enormously successful, making possible so much of our mission and ministry through her fundraising efforts for our Bishop’s Annual Ministries Appeal. The Sutton Scholars® High School Enrichment Program for Baltimore City public high school students would not be as successful as it is today if it were not for her tireless fundraising efforts since its inception. Kathy and I have loved working together and watching so many diocesan ministries grow by her work to increase the stewardship needed to sustain them.

Kathy leads a full life, and after much prayer and reflection she has discerned that now is the period in her life when she can devote more time for herself and her family. Married to the Rev. Tim Grayson, priest-in-charge at St. Barnabas’, Sykesville, she is also a loving mother and grandmother. She’s looking forward to being able to travel more easily and visit with family members both here and abroad – including her beloved young grandson Lucas in California!

I am so grateful to Kathy for her dedication, planning and hard work. Always committed to strengthening the financial footing of the Diocese of Maryland’s various ministries, she is working on a three-year strategic plan for stewardship and development that will help guide our next steps and ensure that none of the momentum of our Bishop’s Appeal mission and ministries will be lost.

Kathy has put together an incredible team in our diocese. The Rev. Rock Schuler, our grant writer and consultant, and Mr. Martin Scarborough, our development associate, will continue their good work into the future under the guidance of our next director of development.

Join me in wishing Kathy the absolute best in this next period of her life. Please know that we are not really losing her; she has eagerly expressed to me her desire to continue to volunteer her time and talents to us for special projects as needed. She will always be a part of the Diocese of Maryland – our community of love!
