Bishop Eugene Taylor Sutton delivered the sermon at the 80th General Convention’s Sunday Eucharist. In his message to the Church, he encouraged us to tear down the walls that separate us.
Bishop Sutton’s sermon was enthusiastically received in both the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops as a call to action, an educational moment, a gift and an inspiration. Social media shares and comments rolled in rapidly as his pre-recorded (to comply with COVID protocols of the Convention) message was played.
On Monday, July 11, our Diocesan Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s video documentary, The Trail of Souls: A Journey Toward Truth and Transformation, debuted in the House of Bishops. The House of Bishops received the documentary with appreciation and many bishops have indicated they plan to use it as a resource in their dioceses as they begin to tell their own stories of truth and transformation. Bishop Sutton was honored by resolution for his leadership in the Church on reconciliation and reparations, along with Bishop Ihloff and our diocesan staff and all volunteers for hosting a welcoming and powerful General Convention.
Take time to watch Bishop Sutton’s sermon and our Trail of Souls documentary. The Episcopal Church, at its 80th General Convention, recognized our leadership for the work we have done and continue to do, to repair the breach and tear down the walls that separate us and prevents us from sustaining our Community of Love.
