Join us to celebrate mission in the Diocese of Maryland at two events in the month of May. On May 17 we honor the work of Justice Thurgood Marshall and the 71st anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. On May 31 we gather to award the fourth round of grants from the diocesan reparations fund.
Thurgood Marshall believed deeply in the power of faith to transform society. His legal work helped dismantle the doctrine of “separate but equal,” and his Christian witness reminds us that the fight for justice is not just political—it is spiritual. As Episcopalians, we stand in that legacy, called to be repairers of the breach and proclaimers of truth and we invite you to join us! Let’s honor the past by stepping boldly into the future.
A Service of Justice and Remembrance Honoring Thurgood Marshall and the 71st Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education
May 17, 9:00 AM (EDT)
Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore and streamed live
In partnership with the Thurgood Marshall Center in Baltimore, we will host a sacred and historic gathering at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision and honor the enduring legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall—a trailblazer for civil rights, a native son of Baltimore, and a faithful Episcopalian. This service will be a powerful act of public witness, grounding our call to justice in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will gather in prayer, reflection, and commitment to the work of equity and education for all.
Reparations Grants Awards Ceremony
May 31, 3:00 PM (EDT)
Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore and streamed live
We will gather at the Cathedral of the Incarnation to award the fourth round of diocesan reparations grants and demonstrate our diocesan commitment to returning resources and agency to communities of color and to repairing our relationships with these communities.
At this event we will celebrate five grant awardees who are working to restore African-American and Black communities around our diocese. Those who join us at the Cathedral are invited to gather for a reception following the awards ceremony to meet the grant recipients and learn more about their organizations and projects.
